Most echocardiograms and abdominal sonograms are completed in approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Where should the exam take place in my practice?

The exam should occur in a room that can be darkened without interrupting workflow, such as a spare exam room, surgery room, X-ray room, or treatment area.

Is sedation or anesthesia needed?

Generally, no sedation is required. However, if the patient is aggressive or overly anxious, injectable sedation may be administered.

Will my staff need to help hold?

Yes, one staff member with animal restraint experience will be necessary.

All abnormal echocardiograms are evaluated by a cardiologist, while a DVM sonographer interprets abdominal ultrasounds.

How soon will I get a written report?

Abdominal ultrasound reports are emailed the day after the exam, while cardiac ultrasound reports are reviewed by a cardiologist and sent the next day.

The pet is placed under light anesthesia or heavy sedation for about 10 minutes while the biopsy is performed with simultaneous visualization.

An FNA is often done with a 22g needle, usually without sedation, and typically requires confirmation of a normal platelet count before the procedure.

FNAs are suitable for sampling suspected masses or fluid, while tru-cut biopsies are used when a larger tissue sample is necessary for diagnosis.
