What is 3D vs. 4D ultrasound?

3D provides a still image, while 4D, which stands for four dimensions, includes live motion of the baby that can be recorded on a DVD.

What determines a good image?

The clarity of a 3D/4D image depends on several factors including the baby's position, the amount of amniotic fluid, fetal activity, and the maternal body's condition.

Ultrasound has been safely used in obstetrics for over 35 years, with no harmful bio-effects shown. It uses sound waves to create detailed pictures, rather than radiation.

What should I do to prepare for my ultrasound appointment?

For the best images, hydrate well for a week prior to the visit, eat a small meal before your session, and arrive with a full bladder.

What documents/information are necessary for me to bring to Flushing Hospital when registering as a patient?

When preparing for a scheduled visit to the hospital, pack the following items: photo identification (like a driver's license), health insurance documentation, comfortable clothing for returning home, a list of medications you take (with dosages), personal contacts, personal items (like eyeglasses or dentures), toiletries, and optionally, your own slippers. While the hospital offers free telephone and television services, you may bring your own device for entertainment.

What happens if I am in need of health care but don’t have health insurance?

Individuals without medical insurance may still qualify for assistance through Flushing Hospital’s Financial Assistance Office. You can reach them at 718-670-5588 or visit the Billing Center section of our website for more information.

How do I get my health records at Flushing Hospital?

To obtain your health records, download the Authorization for Release of Health Information form, complete it, and return it either by mail or in person to the Medical Records Department at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, 4500 Parsons Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11355. The office is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Note that a fee might apply for copies of the records, unless they are sent directly to a doctor. For further assistance, call 718-670-5425 or 5424.

Where do I go for my baby’s birth certificate?

To access your child's birth certificate, contact the New York City Bureau of Vital Records. You can order a certificate online for $15 or visit 125 Worth Street, Lower Manhattan, for in-person requests.

How can I get help with an issue I’m having when dealing with the hospital?

If you have questions or concerns about your care, our patient advocate is available to assist. The advocate can help resolve issues and document grievances for review by the executive office. To contact the patient advocate, call 718-670-5386.

What are the visiting hours?

Visitors over the age of 12 are welcome from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on general medical/surgical floors. Dads can visit in the mother/baby unit at any time, and parents can visit the Pediatric Unit anytime. There are limited visitations for Psychiatry, Chemical Dependence, and Intensive Care Units.

What is MRI and how does it work?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. An MRI scanner allows physicians to look inside the body without using surgery or harmful dyes. It uses magnets, radio waves, and computers to produce clear images of the human anatomy.

Can anybody have an MRI scan?

Some individuals may be at risk if they have certain conditions like a pacemaker or metal particles in their eyes. It's crucial to inform our staff about any medical history before the scan.

Is there any danger in having an MRI scan?

Yes, certain conditions or implants can make it unsafe to undergo an MRI. It's important to disclose any medical issues to our staff prior to the exam.

What do I have to do to prepare for an MRI?

Generally, you do not need specific preparation unless instructed otherwise. Always bring your doctor's prescription and insurance information.

Does it hurt? Will I feel anything?

There is no pain involved during the scan. Our machines are designed to be quiet and comfortable.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the MRI?

Most insurances cover MRI services. Please check with your insurance provider to see what is included.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for an MRI?

Yes, a prescription is required to proceed with the MRI.

Can someone else stay with me in the MRI scanner room?

Yes, someone can accompany you, provided it is safe for them to do so.

When will I find out the results?

Results are typically sent to your doctor within 24 hours.
